Madhubani:- There is a very famous saying among Maithil Brahmins – ‘Marriage is more important than marriage’, which means that there are more rituals and customs in marriage than marriage. One such tradition has been going on in Maithil Brahman for centuries, when the wedding procession of a girl arrives at the door, then the bride worships Kumari Gauri for the last time. After that, Gauri Puja is done again after marriage.
Gauri Puja by riding elephant
Kumari Gauri puja has great importance. It is believed that when the wedding procession arrives at the door, the girl climbs on the elephant (which is made of clay, is decorated and coloured) and worships Gauri, wishing for a husband like Ram. The rule is that a betel nut is consecrated as Gauri and the bride worships it with vermilion. In whose house the girl gets married, the grandmothers there start making clay elephants a few days in advance. It is colored and given a good shape.
Also, betel nut is worshiped by coloring it with red color in Sarva (earthen bowl). On the wedding day, the bride gets dressed up and covers herself with Aanchal and mounts an elephant and performs Gauri Puja. It is believed that this ritual was performed for the first time by Mother Sita when Lord Ram met her and since then every Maithil Brahmin girl has been following this tradition. Anju Devi tells Local 18 that a virgin girl gets lucky if she climbs an elephant and performs Gauri Puja on her wedding day and wishes that she gets a good husband.

chanting gauri mantra
While performing puja, she also chants a mantra, which the elder grandmother of the house teaches to the bride. The virgin recites this mantra from the day of Gauri Puja as long as her husband is alive. The mantra in Maithili is as follows – ‘O Gauri Mahamaya, Chandan Dali Torait Aili, Fulak Mala Gathat Aili, Suhag Bhagya Bateit Aili, Chandan Dala Fulak Maal Apne Leli, Suhag Bhagya Hamra Deli Swami Putra Gauriye Namah’.
