Mundeshwari Temple was built during the 3rd or 4th centuries. Lord Vishnu resides in this temple. An idol of Lord Shiva was installed in the 7th century. Inscriptions of the year 625 have been found in the areas around this temple. It is 60 km from Varanasi. It is one of the oldest and most worshipped temples in India. It is situated on a mountain called Mundeshwari. Goddess Durga appears here in Vaishnava form as Mundeshwari Mata. Mundeshwari Mata looks somewhat like Varahi Mata.
Lord Shiva also has 4 faces in the temple. There are also idols of Surya, Ganesha and Vishnu in the temple. During the month of Chaitra, devotees come to this temple in large numbers. Archaeologists have transferred 9 idols to the Kolkata Museum for security reasons. This temple is considered a symbol of Tantric worship. The main feature of this temple is Satvik Bali. Here, first of all, the sacrificial goat is brought in front of the idol of the goddess. Then the priest touches the idol of the mother and throws some rice grains on the goat, due to which the goat becomes unconscious. Then after a while, Akshat is thrown on it and the goat stands up. Just like this, the process of sacrifice is completed.
