World News in Hindi: Can someone ever get death penalty for stealing a chicken? This is not possible under Indian law, but a case came to light in Nigeria in which a person who stole a chicken was given death penalty. When this young man committed the crime, he was only 17 years old. He had stolen from a policeman’s house. Now 10 years have passed since this incident. Now he is 27 years old. The mother knocked on every door she could to save her son from death. Now the mother has got a good news in this matter.

This incident is from Osun state located in South-West of Nigeria. A person named Segun Olowukere had committed this crime in 2010. This 17 year old man, along with his friend Morakinyo Sunday, had carried out the incident. Both of them were arrested in this case. According to the BBC report, both of them attacked the house of a police officer and another person with an old-fashioned wooden gun and a sword. His intentions were to commit some big crime but he was only able to steal chickens. In this case, in 2014, Osun High Court Judge Jide Falola had sentenced both of them to death after finding them guilty of forcibly entering the house of a police officer and stealing his belongings.

Parents filed complaint
At that time there was a lot of uproar regarding this matter throughout Nigeria. People believed that this punishment was quite harsh. Later, both of them were taken to the notorious Kirikiri Prison in Lagos State, where they were kept in the death row cell. Olowukere’s parents recently appeared on a podcast, where both tearfully begged to forgive their only child. It is expected that he will be released in early 2025. According to the report, Nigeria has not hanged anyone since 2012. However, there are 3,400 such prisoners in the country who were given death sentence.

Governor apologized
The governor promised to pardon him on Tuesday. Governor Ademola Adeleke wrote on Twitter that Olowukere should be pardoned because saving life is important. I have directed the Commissioner of Justice to initiate the process to grant the privilege of mercy to the youth. Osun is a land of justice and equality. We must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of life. The situation regarding Morakinyo Sunday, the other convict who was sentenced along with Olowukere in this case, has not been clarified.
