The governor said in a post on Instagram that he has invited Soren to take oath as chief minister. State Congress president Rajesh Thakur confirmed to news agency PTI that the swearing-in will take place at 5 pm.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren submitted his resignation to the governor on July 3 and Hemant Soren staked claim to form the government. Champai, an old party loyalist, took over the reins of the state five months ago after the latter’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an alleged money laundering case.
Hemant was granted bail by the High Court on June 28. A week later, he is set to return as CM. This is happening when the ED is reportedly planning to file a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court against the High Court order granting him bail.
The JMM legislative party elected Hemant as its leader on July 2 and he submitted a request to the governor to form the government. JMM’s India Block allies in the state – Congress and RJD – have supported the decision.
Jharkhand is going to have assembly elections later this year along with Maharashtra and Haryana. The Bharatiya Janata Party has to save its government in Jharkhand. The ruling coalition will have to fight the anti-incumbency wave to win re-election in the state.
