Health Tip for Today: With India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting warmer than normal days in May in many states, it is important to pay attention to what we eat to stay healthy and hydrated. Certain foods can make us feel uncomfortable, bloated and even dehydrated in the heat. Recently, it was also reported that hospitals across the country are seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. It is also important to pay attention to signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as fainting, seizures, irritability, headache, excessive sweating, weakness or dizziness, rapid breathing, nausea and vomiting.

Here is a list of foods to avoid this summer season:

1. Spicy Food: It is important to manage your diet during the summer season. Spicy food can increase body temperature and make you sweat even more. Try to keep your diet cool and light which will also help you stay fresh.

2. Soda/Aerated Drinks: Don’t drink aerated drinks or soda when you’re out in the sun or even at home. Aerated drinks often contain caffeine and sugar, both of which can contribute to dehydration. The caffeine present in aerated drinks can increase your body temperature, making you feel hotter in summer. Instead of aerated drinks, take buttermilk, lassi, shikanji, lemon water, coconut water, fresh juice without sugar.

3. Fried fatty foods: Eating fried and fatty foods can make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable in hot weather. Now it’s time to change your French fries, burger, pizza, samosa, vada. Eggs should also be consumed in small quantities.

4. Sweet Food: Sugary foods and beverages can cause dehydration and loss of energy, so it’s best to limit your intake. Avoid milkshakes, frozen desserts, candies and sweets with high sugar content, fruit juices with added sugar, tetra pack fruit juices etc.

5. Red Meat and More: If you are a non-veg lover, now is the time to reduce the intake of red meat, mutton, pork, beef as these can cause excess heat in the body during summers.
