History of National Education Day

The Ministry of Education declared 11 November as National Education Day in 2008 to honor the contribution of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad to education.

During his tenure as the first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad played an important role in establishing institutions and promoting primary and secondary education as well as increasing opportunities for higher studies.

He was a pioneer of education for the poor and inspired girls to study. He believed in the importance of free and compulsory education for all children up to the age of 14 years.

For his notable contributions to education, he received India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, which was awarded posthumously in 1992.
