AHMEDABAD: On the occasion of International Yoga Day, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday said his government will set up 51 ‘yoga studios’ across the state to promote the ancient practice which has “greatly benefited people” during Covid.
The chief minister was at Nadabet in Banaskantha district, near the India-Pakistan border, to attend a state-level programme organised to mark the 10th International Yoga Day.
Several state ministers and Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary also attended the event held at Nadabet. The official release said that this is the first time that Yoga Day is being celebrated at Nadabet.
In his address to yoga participants at NADABET, the Chief Minister said that Yoga – a system of exercise for the body and controlled breathing – has reached every corner of the world due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The event at Nadabet is jointly organised by the State Yoga Board and Border Security Force
He said that efforts are being made to popularise yoga through the State Yoga Board.
He said, “This year we are planning to set up 51 government yoga studios to provide one-stop health solutions to the people. The Gujarat government is committed to taking yoga to every corner of the state.”
Patel said that Yoga is the best solution for today’s stressful life and under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi it has become a mass movement.
The Chief Minister said, “After the corona virus epidemic, people’s attitude towards India’s ancient heritage has changed a lot. Yoga is now widely accepted as a weapon to fight the corona virus. During the lockdown, when people stayed at home, they kept themselves healthy by doing yoga asanas. Yoga helped in increasing the immunity of people and strengthening the lungs.”
Speaking on the occasion, Patel told the participants that around 1.25 crore people are participating in the Yoga Day programmes organised across the state on Friday.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed yoga along with other participants at an event organised at a public park on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Ahmedabad, an official release said, while Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil attended a yoga event in Surat.
Other ministers, MLAs, MPs and BJP functionaries also participated in yoga programmes across the state, officials said.
On the call of Prime Minister Modi, the United Nations General Assembly declared in December 2014 to celebrate 21st June every year as International Yoga Day.
