Tech giant Google has reportedly claimed that the company was assisting Indian authorities in the serious incident that killed three people who were following Google Maps while traveling on an incomplete bridge .
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the men were on their way to attend a wedding in Uttar Pradesh, where tragically, their car fell off an incomplete bridge and into the Ramganga river earlier this Sunday. The publication quoted police officials as saying in a report that the driver was following the navigation software Google Maps while driving to attend a wedding.
Additionally, a report by the Press Trust of India news agency reported that police have questioned an unnamed Google Maps executive and investigated some officials of the government public works department.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We are working closely with authorities and providing our support as they investigate this issue,” a Google spokesperson told AFP in an emailed statement.
It is noteworthy that a local police officer has also said that a part of the bridge was damaged during the flood last year. The circle officer highlighted the lack of safety measures, such as barriers or warning signs, on the under-construction bridge, which could have avoided the tragic incident.
According to reports, the car was traveling at high speed, making it impossible for the driver to stop before the bridge ended suddenly. After this the vehicle fell 25 feet into the Ramganga river, causing instant death of all three passengers. A user has shared this information on X.
In another similar tragic incident, two doctors died in Kerala state last year when their car fell into the Periyar river after using a navigation app.
