The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be the first major telecast of the awards season. The Golden Globe Awards had long been one of the highest-profile awards season broadcasts, second only to the Oscars. The show was promoted as an A-list party, with its hosts often adopting a more outrageous tone than their Academy counterparts. Here are the funniest speeches from the Globes over the years:
Ricky Gervais
When British actor Ricky Gervais won the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for The Office in 2004, he had to be reminded by his co-stars to thank the Hollywood Film Press Association. He attributed this problem to his being British. “We ruled the world before you,” he said, causing laughter from the audience.
emma thompson
After securing a Golden Globe for her performance in Ang Lee’s 1995 period drama Sense & Sensibility, Emma Thompson read a hilarious article about how author Jane Austen would have described the experience of attending the awards ceremony.
steve carell
Steve Carell also won the same award as Ricky Gervais for the American adaptation of The Office in 2006. He joked that since he didn’t know how to write an acceptance speech, his wife Nancy Carell did the honors. Then he proceeded to thank his wife – twice! “For my wife to give me two children, it would have been as painful as childbirth,” Steve read.
Sofia Vergara
While presenting an award at the 2017 ceremony, Sofia Vergara intentionally mispronounced “The Golden Globes have an annual tradition” as “The Golden Globes have an anal tradition,” referring to the HFPA’s rather controversial reputation.
Taraji P Henson
When the Black actor won a Globe in 2016 for his performance in Empire, he was given a prompt at the podium to finish his acceptance speech, to which he responded, “I’ve waited 20 years for this. You will wait.”
The 81st Golden Globe Awards will stream in India on January 8 at 6:30 PM exclusively on Lionsgate Play.
