From diarrhoea to cholera: Stay safe from these monsoon diseases

While going through this difficult time, it is important to remember that areas with heavy rainfall are breeding grounds for many waterborne diseases. Karnataka has reported several cases of dengue and Zika virus in the last few months. Many people have lost their lives in Kerala due to this cruel brain-eating bacteria. Here are some diseases that we should be aware of and take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Dengue:

Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can cause many diseases. Dengue is one of them – its early symptoms are muscle and joint pain, headache and fever. After rain, water accumulates in many places, which must be taken care of immediately.

Cholera:

Cholera is a waterborne disease that is caused by the consumption of contaminated water. Due to heavy rains, hygiene and sanitation may be affected, leading to cholera. Dry mucous membranes, rapid heart rate and low blood pressure are the early symptoms to look out for.

Typhoid:

Typhoid is also a monsoon-related waterborne disease caused by contaminated water. Prolonged high fever, constipation, abdominal pain and vomiting are the early symptoms of typhoid, which require immediate medical intervention.

Although viral fever is common throughout the year and can also occur due to weather changes, viral fever is more common among people during the monsoon season. Fever, fatigue, chills, body pain and weakness are its early symptoms, which should be paid attention to.

Diarrhea:

Diarrhea is a very common monsoon disease caused by polluted water and consumption of contaminated food items. It can range from mild to life-threatening. The common symptoms of diarrhea are loose stools, abdominal cramps, bloody stools and nausea.
