Fissures within the opposition Bharat faction widened this week with a tussle between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress over seat-sharing in West Bengal. The development comes after reports indicated that Mamata Banerjee-led TMC had offered two Lok Sabha seats to the other party in the upcoming elections.
“It is Mamata who needs Congress to win, not the other way around. We are quite capable of fighting alone in the state and winning more seats than last time. We are ready to show so much. We do not need Mamata’s mercy and we are quite capable of retaining both these seats (even if TMC contests them),” Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.
The party’s West Bengal chief mocked the alleged allocation, noting that the seats in question were already held by Congress representatives.
“We won these seats by defeating Mamata Banerjee’s TMC and BJP. Are they doing us any favors? Who will trust her (Mamata) in seat allocation?” he asked.
