Fit after 50: Ways to stay mentally sharp and prevent cognitive decline with age

As the body starts aging, the brain also starts showing signs of aging. Whether it is memory loss or cognitive decline, dealing with old age can be extremely difficult. However, with a healthy lifestyle and dietary choices, we can slow down aging and cognitive decline as we age.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Rahul Chandok, principal consultant, mental health and behavioural sciences, Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, said, “As we age, our cognitive abilities typically decline, resulting in memory loss, reduced problem-solving skills, and decreased mental clarity. However, research shows that our brain can adapt and change throughout life. This concept is known as neuroplasticity.”

“By incorporating certain strategies into our daily routine, we can keep our minds sharp and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Taking control of your brain health can help you stay mentally healthy for years to come,” said Dr Rahul Chandok and shared some effective ways to stay mentally sharp after 50, ranging from social engagement and mental stimulation to exercise and stress management.

Stay socially connected:

Staying connected with others through regular phone calls, video calls, and in-person meetings helps keep the brain healthy. It also helps improve mood.

Routine check-ups:

Having regular checkups with a primary care physician can help identify and manage conditions that may contribute to dementia. With supportive exercises, symptoms can be slowed down.
