Face taping involves applying adhesive strips or tape to targeted areas such as the forehead or around the eyes before sleeping. This exercise promises to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles overnight. Fans and social media influencers swear by its ability to deliver a smooth, refreshed look with consistent use, making it a popular choice for those hesitant about injections.

What exactly is face tapping?

Face tapping is also known as emotional freedom technique (EFT) or facial acupressure and is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). “Face tapping involves rhythmically tapping specific pressure points on the face and neck with your fingers. This exercise is said to stimulate collagen production, increase blood circulation, and promote lymphatic drainage,” says Dr. Sonali Kohli, Consultant – Dermatology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital explains.

Where Botox directly targets muscle movement to prevent wrinkles, face tapping promotes relaxation. “Face taping works as an adjunct method for skin rejuvenation, but it doesn’t have the same immediate or targeted effects as Botox,” says Kohli. “It’s more of a preventative than a quick fix for deep wrinkles. Or maintenance equipment.”

The appeal of face taping lies in its non-invasive, needle-free nature, making it a comfortable option for people apprehensive about injections. By increasing circulation and relaxing facial muscles, patting leaves skin looking more refreshed and lifted.

However, experts caution against comparing its results to Botox. “Face taping lacks scientific validation and cannot logically be compared with Botox, as both involve completely different mechanisms and results. Dr. Mandeep Singh, HOD of Plastic Surgery, Dermatology and Cosmetic, says, “Botox is a medically approved procedure with proven results in reducing wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles, but face tapping is a wellness technique, There are no clinical studies to prove its effectiveness.” Surgery at Paras Health, Gurugram.

Botox directly freezes the muscles responsible for wrinkles, which cannot be achieved by taping the face. Kohli explains, “Tapping improves skin tone and elasticity over time, but it does not eliminate dynamic wrinkles or provide the dramatic anti-aging results provided by Botox.”

That said, taping can complement Botox treatments. Maintaining skin health and reducing stress – two factors that accelerate aging – can be a valuable addition to an overall skin care routine.

“Face taping is a great way to support your skin’s natural processes,” says Kohli. “But if you’re looking for specific, long-lasting wrinkle treatments, Botox is unmatched in its precision and results.”

While face taping offers an accessible and gentle approach to skin care, it is not a substitute for more advanced cosmetic procedures. Instead, it serves as a complementary practice for those who prioritize overall skin health and wellness.
