The country is in the grip of scorching heat and that as well as sweat, has become a tricky combination for the skin. Breakouts, rashes and acne may increase during this time, so it is wise to use mild products in your beauty routine. One of these important things is face serum. Sharing why this is important, Dr. Nishita Ranka, medical director and founder of her skin clinic, says, “I get a lot of people asking about the effectiveness of face serums as an alternative to creams during the summer months. I ask. With the intense heat and humidity, you need a skin care regimen that is effective and comfortable and a serum fits right in.”

What is this

Serums are lightweight, water-based products designed to deliver concentrated active ingredients deep into the skin.

“Face serums have emerged as powerful elixirs,” says Dr Geetika Srivastava, founder of Influenza Clinic in Delhi. They are lightweight, fast-absorbing formulations designed to address specific skin problems such as acne, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, dryness and dullness. Often referred to as ‘actives’ due to their high concentration of active ingredients, these are typically the first layer applied to the skin after cleansing.’

The serum provides multi-functional benefits

Explaining the difference between creams and serums, Dr. Nishita Ranka says, “During Indian summers, the skin produces more oil, making heavy creams look less attractive. This is where serums can be particularly beneficial. They absorb quickly without leaving greasy residue, making them ideal for hot and humid conditions.

A serum can address a variety of things, as she adds, “A hyaluronic acid serum provides essential hydration without the heaviness of a cream and draws moisture into the skin, keeping it hydrated in the heat. Vitamin C serum, on the other hand, can help combat free radical damage caused by sun exposure and reduce pigmentation. Some serums and moisturizers come with added SPF, which can be a convenient option.’

In some cases, apply a light moisturizer

There may be exceptions. While Dr. Ranka says serums are a great addition to a summer skin care routine, they shouldn’t completely replace creams. “A light, non-comedogenic moisturizer is still necessary to seal in the moisture and active ingredients from the serum,” she advises.

Dr. Prerna Sikka, dermatologist, Dr. Karishma Aesthetics, Bengaluru, also adds, “For dryer areas that are usually away from the coast, the skin becomes more dehydrated, so night cream formulations may be better.” . Opt for a lightweight or gel-based moisturizer during the day.

Choosing the Right Serum

Dr Geetika Srivastava explains how to do it:

Know your skin type. If your skin is dry or sensitive, stay away from ingredients like AHAs, retinol or even vitamin C. Also, consult a dermatologist before including serums.

Choose a serum based on your skin concern, whether it’s anti-aging, skin brightening or skin hydrating. If you are a beginner, start with low concentration and gradually increase power. Stay away from parabens and fragrances.

different types of serums

What is the correct layering routine for serums?

She shares steps to incorporate serums into your skin care routine

Step 1: Cleanse the skin

Step 2: Apply serum (as per skin concern) on bare skin

Step 3: Moisturize your skin to retain moisture

Step 4: Use sunscreen with SPF to prevent UV exposure

Step 5: Makeup (Light)

Note: Give each product enough time to absorb into your skin before layering another product.

Memorization:
Always do a patch test to check for any adverse reactions.

time to apply
It depends on the active ingredients used in the facial serum. Retinol needs to be applied only at night. Vitamin C, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid can be applied both day and night.
