New Delhi. The combined sales of electric vehicles of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor and its subsidiary Kia Motor crossed the figure of 1.5 million (15 lakh) units by December. Hyundai has achieved this figure for the first time after launching its first electric car in 2011.

Hyundai launched its first EV model, BlueOn, in the domestic market in July 2011, which was based on the i10 hatchback. Data from the companies shows that Hyundai and Kia sold 5,16,441 electric cars in the beginning of 2023, which increased to 15.3 lakh units by the end of the year.

Of the 10 Hyundai and Kia electric cars launched in Korea last year, 8 are being sold in foreign markets. The best selling models were Hyundai’s Kona Electric and IONIQ 5. Kia’s electric cars included Niro and EV6.

Despite the slowdown in electric vehicle sales, Hyundai plans to launch an electric version of the Casper mini car later this year. Kia will start production of the EV 3 compact EV model at its domestic plant in the second quarter.

In 2024, Hyundai aims to sell 42.4 lakh vehicles, slightly higher than last year’s figure of 42.1 lakh units. At the same time, Kia aims to sell 32 lakh units, which is 3.6 percent more than 30.8 lakh units. Hyundai-Kia is the world’s third-largest carmaker by cumulative sales, after Toyota Motor and Volkswagen Group.
