India will watch more electric cars launch in 2025 than cars operated by engines. Does this indicate a change in preference?

In the first month of 2025, the global sales of electric vehicles (EVS) saw an increase of 18 percent on a year-on-year basis. The latest figures released by London -based analysis firm RHO Motion highlight the demand for Telwind for EVS in most parts of the world led by China and European region. How well India is ready to contribute to this speed?

According to data released by RHO Motion, 1.3 million EVS was sold in the world in January 2025, up to 18 percent from data in January 2024. In the event of a poll, China was once again the largest vehicle in the world and EV market, where about seven lakh units were sold. It was a jump of 12 percent year after year in the country. The countries of the United Kingdom along with the European Union and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) saw sales of about 2.50 lakh units up to 21 percent. The United States and Canada sold 1.30 lakh units of EVS simultaneously, jumping 22 percent.

While the signals for a strong 2025 are omnipresent, the challenges emerging from potential trade wars remain a matter of concern with US President Donald Trump, which apply high tariffs to many products including automobiles.

How is India kept in EV game?

India’s EV landscape has dominated two electric vehicles, which holds a 55 percent stake in the overall EV market, followed by electric cars and three-wheelers. And while the e-two-wheelers are constantly bridging the price intervals with petrol-powered options, the e-car market is rather in control. So far under control, that is.

India is set to see around 18 electric car launch in 2025. This is the first year when the number of electric car launch will be higher than the engine cars. Highlighting the list is the Hyundai Bitter EV, which has already been launched, while Maruti Suzuki E Vitara, Tata Harrier EV, Winfast VF7, MG M9 and others are other big-ticket models. Luxury car manufacturers are also launching their IX1 LWB with BMW at a lower price than the engine-operated X1 to strengthen their respective EV portfolio.

EVS share in motor types in the overall automobile market in India is nine percent in the United States and about seven percent in China. But 2025 is likely to be a year that replaces it with a spotlight on battery-powered dynamics options. The list is expanding and a large question of cheap options begins to be addressed. Experts believe that it is possible to reach about 10 percent of 2025 for EVS share in India’s automobile sector, which establishes the government’s ambition to take this figure up to 30 percent by 2030.
