More than 800 earthquakes have been recorded on Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi and Ios Islands since February 1.

Athens. The Greece government has announced an emergency due to the tremors of continuous earthquakes in the Santorini Island. The islands around the Aegean Sea are continuously trembled by the shaking of these earthquakes.
The earthquake ‘began with light (lower than 3) and mostly felt shaking in late January. However, from the beginning of February, the number and intensity of these earthquakes started increasing. Since February 1, more than 800 earthquakes (intensity 3 and above) have been recorded on Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi and Ios Islands.
Due to these earthquakes, more than 16,000 people and tourists living in the island of Santori have left the island with fear. However, the intensity of shocks on Saturday decreased somewhat, but still at least 11 shock intensity was 4 or more.
Earthquake tremors felt till Türkiye
On 6 February, the biggest earthquake of 5.1 magnitude occurred, which was felt 240 km away from Athens, Crete to Türkiye. Apart from this, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11 am on Saturday. Although no major damage or casualties have been reported so far, incidents of falling stones from coastal rocks and cracks in weak buildings have come to light.
School closed till 14 February, big shock even further
Experts have warned that even more big earthquakes can occur. The Greece administration has decided to close all schools in the islands of Santorin, Amorgos, Anafi and Ios Islands till 14 February.
Significantly, the most powerful earthquake of the 20th century in Greece occurred in July 1956, the intensity of which was 7.7. 53 people died in this earthquake that came near Amorgos. Scientists have clarified that recent earthquakes have no relation with the volcano of Santorini.
The volcano of Santorini has exploded a disastrous explosion in 1600 BC, while the second volcano located near it erupted about 375 years ago. The situation is constantly being monitored, and the administration is cautious to deal with any emergency.
