Coffee is not the savior you want it to be, it is definitely the perfect boost to start your day but it has many disadvantages too. As a coffee lover, you might shrug your shoulders thinking who cares if an extra cup of coffee makes you more productive for the day? It is almost a lazy thing that you intentionally pamper yourself with. Your heart, on the other hand, does not agree. Drinking too much coffee can put your heart health at risk.
An Indian research study by Zydus Medical College and Hospital exposed the ugly truth about caffeine consumption. Consuming more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is the equivalent of about four cups of coffee or two energy drinks, increases the risk of developing serious cardiovascular problems later on. This includes other caffeinated products such as soda and energy drinks.

How Caffeine Affects Your Heart
Coffee inhibits the body’s parasympathetic system, which is primarily responsible for the body’s natural way to rest and recover. This calms the heart rate and slows breathing. However, since coffee is a stimulant, it inhibits the parasympathetic system and increases heart rate and adrenaline levels making you more alert and productive with higher energy.
Constant disruptions can lead to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension is a silent threat and does not show any obvious symptoms. But it gradually leads to dangerous diseases like coronary artery disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and dementia.

Who is at risk?
Women, people living in cities and working professionals engaged in business and management are more vulnerable to excessive coffee consumption. Challenging jobs with long working hours, stressful workplaces and busy, fast-paced lifestyles, as well as the ubiquitous availability of coffee in countless urban cafes or office coffee machines, often push people to have another cup, whether unconsciously or intentionally. The effects of caffeine increase even more when drinking more than 600 mg of coffee. The researchers urged to raise awareness of this issue.
Patience is the limit
Don’t give up your favourite coffee drink just yet. Consume coffee in moderation every day. Moderation is the best rule. First, check your coffee consumption and if it is above the 400 mg limit, reduce it gradually with herbal teas or decaf options. Stay hydrated throughout the day to keep coffee cravings at bay. Adequate sleep is needed to feel well rested and prevent coffee dependence. Drinking coffee wisely can help you avoid future problems.
