Hyderabad, 5 January 2023 – Dr. K. Anand Kumar, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL), has been honored with the “Vocational Excellence Award 2023-24” at a grand ceremony organized by the Rotary Club of Pollachi in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Kumar is a member of some renowned personalities like Dr. K. Sivan, ISRO, and Dr. M. Annadurai, ISRO, who were previous recipients of this prestigious award.
Dr. K Anand Kumar has played a key role in advancing India’s expertise in the production of vaccines and biosimilars, ensuring that critical biologic treatments are more accessible to patients both in the country and abroad. Dr. Kumar led IIL to create a “One Health” organization that has supported disease control through affordable and accessible vaccination for both humans and animals. Engaged in vaccine development over the past thirty years, he has been influential in providing access to affordable animal and human vaccines to more than 60 developing countries. He has continuously worked towards “Make in India”, protection of lives from deadly diseases and furthering R&D efforts.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kumar led the efforts to revive the vaccine manufacturing facility at IIL and rapidly prepare the COVID-19 vaccine drug substance. This has not only helped India’s self-reliant cause but has also earned them praise from the Government of India.
With the aim of becoming self-reliant in vaccine production, he has strengthened IIL’s position in the Indian and global vaccine market and contributed significantly to health efforts. Through its advocacy for philanthropic strategies, Dr. Kumar led IIL has adopted several schools, as well as supported their basic needs and provided food and uniforms to the students. Indian Immunologicals has provided fortified, flavored milk to over 6,000 rural students daily, provided equipment to set up biogas plants for waste management and uplifted over 400 rural families. The company has set up an oxygen production plant at the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences, which has saved many lives against COVID-19. Dr. Kumar’s vision is to make Thiruvananthapuram rabies-free as well as a healthy and inclusive place.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr K Anand Kumar, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Limited, said, “It is a great honor to accept this award from the prestigious Rotary Club in recognition of my efforts in the field of vaccines. This will encourage me to rededicate myself to a greater role in disease control in the country.”
Apart from many other achievements, Rotary Club has always been at the forefront and has contributed immensely to the nation in the control of polio disease by actively running sustained Pulse Polio campaigns.
Earlier, Dr. Anand Kumar had received several other awards including the prestigious – ‘Best Alumnus Award’ from his alma mater, “Vector Control Research Centre, ICMR” and “PSG Sons & Charities”.
