Doug Sheehan, Emmy-nominated star of Clueless and Knots Landing, dies at 75

Doug Sheehan, an Emmy Award-nominated television actor known for his roles in soap operas and sitcoms, died last month at his home in Big Horn, Wyoming, at age 75.

A local funeral home announced his death on its website last Thursday, saying he “passed away peacefully” and “his beloved wife was at his side.” Sheehan is survived by his wife, Kat, to whom he had been married for more than 40 years at the time of his death. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Sheehan’s acting career

Born in California in 1949, Sheehan began his television career in 1978 with a guest appearance in an episode of “Charlie’s Angels.” His first regular role came a year later as attorney Joe Kelly on ABC’s “General Hospital.”

During his tenure on the popular soap opera, Sheehan appeared in 205 episodes and earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Recalling his time on ‘General Hospital,’ Sheehan said in a 1989 interview, “I was in the ‘Camelot’ phase when Luke and Laura were running around like crazy to save the world, and I was the nice guy standing on the sidelines saying, ‘Go Luke, go!'”

In 1983, Sheehan moved to CBS, where he landed a role on the ‘Dallas’ spinoff ‘Knots Landing.’ For four seasons, he played Ben Gibson, a freelance reporter and former CIA operative who becomes protagonist Valene Ewing’s second husband. He appeared in 100 episodes before his character was eliminated from the show in season eight.

Sheehan’s career has spanned various popular television series, including guest roles on ‘Cheers,’ ‘MacGyver,’ and ‘Columbo.’ He also had a lead role in the NBC series ‘Day by Day,’ in which he played a stockbroker who turns to running a daycare.

During the 1990s, Sheehan became known for his ‘TV dad’ roles, playing Cher Horowitz in ‘Clueless’ and Sabrina Spellman’s father in ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’.

Sheehan also appeared in films such as ’10’, ‘Victor/Victoria’ and ‘Cops ‘n Roberts’.
