On whether Hollywood is more diverse
There is a constant conversation about making Hollywood more diverse and inclusive. But Don feels there is still a long way to go.
“It depends on when you ask. It often feels like three steps forward and four steps back, or two steps forward and one step back,” Don tells us, adding, “It’s not constant. It’s hard to build anything and it’s hard to get anything greenlit and it’s getting harder to get things greenlit for marginalized people.”
“We are fighting hard. At the same time, when something like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist comes out, we can point to it and be fine. Let’s do more of these things,” he adds.
Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, which streams on JioCinema, is based on the true-crime podcast, and tells the story of the largest heist in Georgia history and how Atlanta turned into a black Mecca. In many ways, this series is an example of black history and how things have changed.
According to the actor, the entertainment business is still grappling with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the writers’ strike.
“This business is changing a lot. We’re dealing with a lot of things because of the streaming strikes and post-Covid shrinking and the economy, so we’re dealing with a lot of things. It’s always going to be a challenge. That’s where we’re fighting the good fight.” Are here to fight,” Don shares hopefully.
On the relevance of the show
Starring Kevin Hart, Dexter Darden, Taraji P. Henson and Samuel L. Jackson, the crime drama is set in 1970s Atlanta and tells the story of one of the biggest heists in America. It begins with Muhammad Ali returning to the boxing ring after being suspended from the sport three years earlier due to his refusal to join the Vietnam War.
Talking about the relevance of the series in the current climate, Don says, “At this time in our country, when history is under attack, it’s really important in a way I never thought it would be in our This will happen before we bring them. Bring things up and talk about them.”
“We understand the tendencies of black people in this country. This special story is about how the city became what it is today and where it really started. It was fun to do that,” the 59-year-old shared, concluding.
