The festival of lights Diwali brings joy, excitement and vibrant celebrations full of sweets, lamps and fireworks, however, amidst the festivities, there are some dangers also hidden that can lead to injuries and accidents, especially for children. As parents, it is important to ensure a safe environment so that your little ones can enjoy the festivities without unnecessary worries.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sanjay Wazir, Medical Director (NCR), Neonatology and Pediatrics, Motherhood Hospitals, Gurgaon, suggested some essential safety tips and guidelines to keep your babies safe during Diwali.
understanding the risks
Children are naturally curious and become fascinated by the sights and sounds of Diwali. This curiosity can lead to various accidents, including burns, falls, and respiratory problems. Awareness of potential risks is the first step in prevention:
• Burning with fire: Use of lamps, candles and fireworks increases the risk of burns. Children may accidentally touch hot surfaces or come too close to open flames.
• Injuries from fireworks: Fireworks can cause serious injury if not handled properly. Injuries can range from burns to more serious trauma, such as eye injuries or hearing loss from loud noises.
• Respiratory problems: Firework smoke can aggravate asthma or other respiratory conditions. Children with pre-existing conditions are particularly vulnerable.

• Allergic reactions: Allergies can occur through contact with certain foods, dyes, or materials used in decoration. Common allergens include nuts, dairy, and artificial colors.
• Gastrointestinal issues: Excessive consumption of sweets and rich foods during Diwali can lead to stomach upset, diarrhea or food poisoning, especially if food hygiene is compromised.
• Insect bites: The festival season may involve outdoor activities which increases the chances of insect bites. Mosquito bites can cause diseases like dengue or malaria, especially in some areas.
Diwali Safety Tips for Your Kids
1. Avoid burning: Teach your children to maintain a safe distance from anything that can spread flame, including lamps and candles. If you’re lighting lamps, keep them in areas where children are less likely to roam around. Always supervise children when they are near any heat sources.
2. Keep a first aid kit handy: Accidents can happen, and being prepared can make a big difference. Make sure your first aid kit has essential items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, soothing creams and burn ointments. Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures to respond quickly to minor injuries.
3. Choose safe crackers: If you decide to allow your children to enjoy fireworks, be sure to purchase them from licensed vendors. Choose safe options that can be enjoyed under adult supervision. Always keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to extinguish an emergency.
4. Buy Organic Rangoli Colours: Making colorful rangoli is a beloved tradition during Diwali. Choose organic colors that are safe for children. Commercial dyes may contain harmful chemicals that can irritate the skin or eyes. Educate your children about the potential dangers of swallowing these dyes or rubbing them in their eyes.

5. Be careful of allergies: Diwali often involves a variety of foods. Be aware of any food allergies your kids may have and ensure their safety by preparing allergy-friendly snacks. Always read ingredient labels to avoid potential allergies.
6. Pay attention to food safety: Make sure all food is prepared and stored safely to prevent foodborne illnesses. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, and avoid leaving perishable items out for long periods of time.
7. Limit exposure to smoke: If your child has asthma or respiratory problems, consider limiting exposure to firework smoke. Create a smoke-free zone in your home where they can enjoy the festivities safely.
8. Educate about fire safety: Tell children about the importance of fire safety. Discuss what to do in case of fire, including “stop, drop, and roll.” Familiarize them with emergency exit routes in your home.
9. Monitor insect bites: If you’re celebrating outside, use insect repellent to protect yourself from bites. Check children regularly for bites and rashes, and seek medical attention if an allergic reaction occurs.
Celebrating Diwali should be a joyful and safe experience for everyone, especially children. By taking proactive steps and educating your little ones about the potential dangers, you can create a festive atmosphere full of joy and laughter.
This Diwali, let’s prioritize safety while cherishing the moments spent with family and friends. With careful planning and supervision, you can ensure that your children’s celebration is memorable and safe.
