UGC said that keeping seats vacant for the entire academic year not only is a waste of resources but also results in many students being deprived of quality higher education.
With the admission season drawing near, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh on Thursday said that after the regular admission process is complete, they will use Class 12 marks to fill the remaining vacant seats.
The announcement comes soon after the University Grants Commission issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for central universities to ensure that all seats in UG and PG courses are filled.
UGC said that keeping seats vacant for the entire academic year not only is a waste of resources but also deprives many students of quality higher education.
Reacting to the UGC directive, Singh said, Year“We welcome the UGC directive. We are equally sensitive that seats in any course should not remain vacant. We will use Class 12 marks to fill the vacant seats in UG programmes.”
Last year, around 5000 seats remained vacant in DU, even though the university adopted various methods to fill all the seats.
According to the standard operating procedure (SOP) issued by the UGC, universities can conduct entrance exams for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses if seats remain vacant after the regular admission rounds.
Speaking about conducting entrance exams to fill the vacant seats, the DU Vice Chancellor said, “We will not conduct entrance exams but will ensure that all the seats in the university are filled.”
The admission process is currently underway for the academic year 2024-25. The university is offering over 71,000 seats in over 65 colleges through the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG).
DU’s current admission process began with the first phase on May 28 and around 270,000 students registered on the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal.
However, the postponement of CUET UG results has delayed the start of the second phase of the admission process. The university aims to move quickly after the results are declared and ensure that all available seats are filled.
