Delhi News: After floods in coaching institutes kill UPSC aspirants, MCD vows action against basement businesses | Aaj Ki Khabar

Date:

Three civil services aspirants died a tragic death after the basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar in Delhi got flooded on Saturday evening, following which angry students staged an overnight protest outside the institute.

By Sunday morning, visuals from the scene emerged, showing students sitting on the road outside Rau’s IAS Study Circle and raising slogans of ‘We want justice’.

According to ANI, an IAS aspirant who was protesting criticised the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), saying, “The MCD says it’s a disaster, but I would say it’s total negligence. Half an hour of rain results in knee-deep water. ‘Disaster’ is something that happens once in a while. My landlord told me he had been telling the councillor for the past 10-12 days that the drain should be cleaned.”

“The first demand is that action be taken against the culprits. The immediate demand is that the actual number of deaths and injuries be revealed,” the student said.

Mayor orders MCD to take action against businesses running in basements

Mayor Shaili Oberoi directed the MCD Commissioner to take immediate strict action against all such coaching centres across Delhi which come under the jurisdiction of MCD and are running commercial activities in basements which is in violation of building bylaws and not in accordance with the norms

He said that an immediate inquiry should be conducted to find out whether any MCD official is responsible for this tragedy or not. If any official is found guilty, strict action should be taken against him.
