The death toll in the building collapse incident in Lucknow has risen to eight as rescue workers recovered three more bodies from the debris, officials said on Sunday. Relief Commissioner GS Naveen, who was present during the rescue operation, said the three bodies recovered have been identified as Raj Kishore (27), Rudra Yadav (24) and Jagroop Singh (35).
A three-storey building housing a storage unit and a motor workshop collapsed in Transport Nagar area on Saturday evening. 28 people were injured in the accident. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals including Lok Bandhu Hospital in the district. Rescue operations are still underway.
A senior district administration official said their focus now was to ensure no one else was trapped under the debris.
According to the police, some construction work was going on in the building, which was built about four years ago, at the time of the incident. Most of the victims were on the ground floor when the incident took place at 4:45 pm on Saturday.
Officials said there was a motor workshop and warehouse on the ground floor, while there was a medical storage facility on the first floor and a cutlery warehouse on the second floor.
‘Cracks appeared in the pillars of the building’
Akash Singh, who works at the medical warehouse and is among the injured, said one of the pillars of the building had developed a crack.
“We had come down to the ground floor as it was raining. We noticed that a pillar of the building had developed a crack. Suddenly, the entire building collapsed on us,” he said, PTI reported.
Adityanath should take cognizance
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the building collapse incident and directed officials to speed up relief operations.
He has also instructed the officials to take the injured to the hospital as soon as possible and provide them proper treatment. CM Yogi has also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash told ANI that CM Yogi is constantly reviewing the situation and relief and rescue operations.
