Bill Gates, a billionaire philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft, may never need to sit through a job interview, but his suggestions about job interviews can become a life-revolutionary for new graduates facing an uncertain job market.
In the 2020 YouTube interview for the series of NBA Star Stephen Curry, called ‘State of Insopiation’, Gates played a role as a young engineering college dropout applying for his first job in Microsoft.
He answered general interview questions like “Why should we hire you?” And “What are your salary expectations?”
Why you should rent me: show me, just don’t tell
Asked why they should be hired, Gates not only listed his skills, he indicated to his portfolio that the interviewer suggested to see the code written by him. He said, “I write a software program beyond any class. I think I have become better over time, so take a look at how ambitious I am,” he said.
But his response did not only end with his technical skills, he also showed his soft skills such as the ability to work well in a team. He said, “I think I can do a good job with people. I can criticize their code with a little harshness, but overall, I like to be in a team. I like ambitious goals. I like how we can guess the future,” he said in the interview.
Importance of honesty in job interview
Gates also addressed a general interview to stumble blocks: weaknesses. Gates admitted that he was not natural in sales or marketing and would prefer to focus on product manufacturing and definition.
This open response did not show him weak, instead he implicated him as a self-conscious professional, who knew what he was bringing to the table and what he did.
Salary expect trick: betting on yourself
The conversation on salary hopes may be strange, but Gates handled it confidently. He did not fully focus on immediate cash, but prioritized long -term development instead, “I hope the option package is good. I am capable of taking a risk, and I think the company has a great future, so I like to get stock options more than cash compensation. I have heard that some other companies are paying a lot, but I have to treat the options.”
This reaction showed the company’s ability to interact with its trust and cleverly in future.
Param Tech Aave for job seekers
As Stephen Curry briefly said, Gates’ mock interview replies revealed that a successful candidate is one who is confident, emotional and eager to learn.
Modern-day recruitment is just looking for more than technical skills. They seek qualities such as teamwork, self-awareness and smart conversation. Whether it is coding, sales, or design, if a candidate shows that they care about their craft and are excited to grow with the team, the candidate can create a permanent impression and do a job.
