Microbiota crowding or dysbiosis as we would call it, occurs when different microbial populations in the gut reach saturation levels that affect each other’s behavior and functions. It benefits or impacts one’s overall health.
For example, when beneficial bacteria predominate, they can thrive on available nutrients and promote metabolic health. However, an imbalance can hinder gut function and trigger inflammation and unwanted problems.
What effect does it have on health?
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Meghraj Ingle, director and senior consultant, gastroenterology at Gleneagles Hospital in Parel Mumbai, shared, “It may contribute to gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), inflammation. Could. Poor digestion, constipation, diarrhea and stomach pain. Remember, don’t blindly follow any trends when it comes to your gut health. It is important to take any supplement only after consulting a doctor. Don’t take a supplement just because your friend or relative recommended it. What works for others may not be suitable for you. Be careful and choose wisely.
Why has it been triggered?
According to Dr. Meghraj Ingle, when competition for beneficial microbes is reduced due to overcrowding, conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or autoimmune disorders can occur. He revealed, “As people consume more processed foods and use antibiotics, the microbiome balance in the gut gets disturbed. This can lead to obesity and diabetes. Reduce your intake of processed foods and do not take antibiotics without doctor’s advice.
He highlighted that processed foods high in sugar and fat and stress are the causes. Symptoms include fatigue and nausea, irregular bowel movements, unpredictable food sensitivities and poor gut health.
What can be done?
“Eat a diet rich in fiber-rich foods like legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables,” advises Dr. Meghraj Ingle. Choose fermented foods, exercise daily, take antibiotics as directed by your doctor, and stay stress-free by doing yoga and meditation. He explained in detail-
- Prevention: Choose fiber-rich foods like whole grains, vegetables and fruits, probiotics, get good sleep, stay stress-free by doing yoga and meditation, exercise daily and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.
- Treatment: Take medicine as per doctor’s advice. Avoid self-medicating or using any supplements on your own.
