Congress reorganises legal department, Abhishek Manu Singhvi becomes head | Mint

Date:

The Congress on Saturday reconstituted its Law, Human Rights and RTI Department and appointed Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its head. The Congress had on August 14 named Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Telangana.

The Department of Law, Human Rights and RTI includes senior lawyers like Salman Khurshid, KTS Tulsi and Vivek Tankha.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the proposal to reorganize the AICC Law, Human Rights and RTI Department with immediate effect. This information was given in a statement issued by the party.

Singhvi has been made the chairman of the department, while the panel includes Khurshid, Tankha, Tulsi, Harin Rawal, Prashanto Sen, Devdutt Kamath and Vipul Maheshwari. Muhammad Ali Khan has been made the secretary in the executive panel.

Aman Panwar, Umar Hoda, Isha Bakshi, Arjun Sharma, Nishant Mandal, Amit Bhandari, Tarannum Cheema, Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, Lalnunhlui Ralte and Swati Draik are the members of the executive panel.

According to Raj Bhavan, the reorganisation comes on the day Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot gave permission to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with the alleged MUDA scam.

In response, Siddaramaiah said that he has the full support of the state cabinet.

He told reporters on Saturday, “The entire cabinet, the party high command, all MLAs, MLCs, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs are with me…”

The Karnataka government has expressed its intention to challenge the governor’s decision in the High Court. Siddaramaiah has said that “everything was done as per the law.”

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today said the state government will put in all its efforts in support of Siddaramaiah.

The complaint accuses Siddaramaiah, his wife Parvathi, his brother-in-law Malikarjuna Swamy Devaraj, who claims to be the owner of the land, and his family of wrongdoing. It is further alleged that MUDA created fake documents and acquired plots worth crores of rupees. Snehamayi Krishna has raised several questions in her complaint.
