JNU Students Union elections will be held on March 22 after a gap of more than four years and the results will be declared on March 24.

The walls of Jawaharlal Nehru University are plastered with colorful posters as the campaign for the student body elections is in full swing with the beats of the traditional ‘dafli’ and catchy slogans echoing in the air. JNU Students Union elections will be held on March 22 after a gap of more than four years and the results will be declared on March 24.

With only three days left for the voting day, students, especially first-time voters, were very excited. He said, “I am participating in the JNUSU elections for the first time and I am very excited. My seniors have told me that elections are like a wedding celebration,” Shorya Sood, a PhD scholar suffering from cerebral palsy, told PTI.

He said, “I will vote for the organization which in its manifesto talks about the welfare of all students and especially persons with disabilities, despite ideological differences.” Student organizations are also running door-to-door campaigns to woo voters.

With election fever rising in the university, several dhabas on the campus are doing brisk business with students including candidates and their supporters congregating at the eateries every evening after a hard day’s campaigning. Animated conversations over a cup of tea are especially common at the famous Sabarmati Dhaba, which witnessed the JNU violence in 2020.

Dhruv Kumar, owner of Sabarmati Dhaba, said, “There is nothing like before in this election. There is more energy and enthusiasm among the people as the elections are being held after four years. Business is booming as students gather here daily after the election campaign. The United Left alliance includes All India Students Association (AISA), Democratic Students Federation (DSF), Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students Federation (AISU). AISF), who want a clean sweep like the 2019 elections. , “There is a legacy of Leftism in JNU. We have been fighting for the rights of students since the beginning. Dhananjay, United Left’s presidential candidate from AISA, said, be it the issue of women’s safety on campus, fee hike, scholarship cuts or infrastructure issue, the Left has always stood for the concerns of the students.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is preparing to give a tough fight to the United Left alliance and is hoping to form a student union led by the right-wing student group in the Left bastion. “The dictatorship of the Left has been prevailing in the JNU campus for a long time. He has not done any developmental work and is only engaged in politics of ruining the reputation of the institute. ABVP presidential candidate Umesh Chandra Ajmira said, we want to end this dictatorial rule and work for the students.

ABVP last won the JNUSU president election in 2000. Since then the party has not been able to maintain its hold in the central panel of JNUSU. Other student organizations such as the Congress-affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI), Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), and the Samajwadi Students’ Organization (SCS) also launched large-scale campaigns to establish themselves as viable alternatives to the traditional Have been. Left-right student bodies.

SCS is the only organization to field a woman candidate, Aradhana Yadav, for the post of president this year. Speaking to PTI, Yadav said, “For us, the safety of women and their representation on campus is the main focus. Many women in JNU come from economically backward and marginalized communities. If I am elected president, I will be their voice.” BAPSA presidential candidate Biswajit Minjee is the first scholar from his village in West Bengal. Minji belongs to a tribal community and his parents work as contract labourers.

“For a long time, other parties like ABVP or the Left have used us as vote bank politics. Now the time has come that the issues of marginally backward groups are represented by members of the same community who actually know their struggle,” Minji said. The Congress student wing has fielded only two candidates for the central panel – president and joint secretary – and is hoping to make a mark.

NSUI presidential candidate Junaid Raza said, ‘Our focus is to end the politics of both ABVP and Left and provide a peaceful environment to the students. “We want to create an inclusive campus.” JNUSU elections were halted amid the COVID-19 pandemic and could not be held thereafter.
