Enlargement of the prostate gland and overactive bladder:

“Enlargement of the prostate gland causes the urethra to narrow and can affect urination. It is very common for the prostate gland to enlarge with increasing age, especially after the age of 60. Due to overactivity of the bladder, the muscles of the bladder become activated prematurely, which affects urination. The above 2 health conditions are independent of each other, although they can co-exist. It is said that about 75% of patients with benign enlargement of the prostate have an overactive bladder,” said Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni. How cold weather can trigger prostate problems:

“Cold stress stimulates the nervous system, more precisely the sympathetic nervous system which results in contraction of the prostate gland and bladder muscles. Interestingly also, insensible loss of body fluid in the form of sweat is much less in cold weather. To maintain fluid balance, the body produces large amounts of urine, leading to frequent urination,” the urologist said. The doctor further said that due to cold weather, hormonal changes can occur in the body which can further cause diarrhea. Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni said, “During cold weather, one stays indoors and consumes more hot beverages. Both caffeinated and non-caffeinated beverages promote diarrhea.”

The urologist said that men above 60 years of age are more at risk of these conditions during the winter season. “It is clear that, men over the age of 60 are more likely to have benign prostate gland enlargement or overactive bladder or both. It is said that 1 in every 2 people has symptoms. “The cold weather makes it even worse.” Read this also Symptoms or signs that men should be aware of when prostate cancer is getting worse
