Some of your favorite foods may actually be costing you more than just calories. According to studies, some ultra-processed foods may shorten your life. For example, eating a hot dog may take 36 minutes, and washing it down with a Coke may take another 12 minutes. Breakfast sandwiches and eggs were found to reduce 13 minutes, while cheeseburgers could reduce 9 minutes. But all is not lost! Health risks associated with ultra-processed foods
Earlier this year, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) revealed concerning findings regarding ultra-processed foods (UPF). Excessive consumption of these foods increases the risk of heart disease-related death by 50% and the risk of mental health problems such as anxiety by 48-53%.
Additionally, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes was 12% higher. UPF was also associated with a 21% higher risk of death from any cause, obesity, and a 40–66% higher risk of heart disease. Other health concerns associated with these foods include sleep problems, depression, asthma, high cholesterol, and gastrointestinal problems. While UFPs can be enjoyed in moderation, doctors still recommend prioritizing healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for better long-term health.
