China’s Mission to Moon: Name of new manned spacecraft, Moon lander unveiled

China’s space agency has unveiled the names of a new manned spacecraft and a moon lander for its mission to send astronauts to the Moon before 2030.

The new crewed spacecraft has been named Mengzhu, which means dream ship in Chinese, according to a statement Saturday from the China Manned Space Agency. The moon lander is called Lanyu, which means embracing the moon in Chinese. The names were selected from approximately 2,000 proposals from the public through August 2023.

According to the space agency’s plan, two Long March-10 carrier rockets will launch the Mengzhu spacecraft and the Lanyu lander into lunar orbit. They will dock with each other, allowing astronauts to enter the lander and land on the Moon.

According to the agency, the spacecraft, lander and carrier rocket are currently in the early prototype development stage.
