Dr Chandrasekhar Pemmasani of the Telugu Desam Party has taken oath as a member of the new Union Cabinet.
He may be new to politics compared to his 542 colleagues in the 18th Lok Sabha, but what Dr Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, 48, a first-time MP from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, has achieved is something many of his fellow parliamentarians would be jealous of. He is a doctor by profession. He studied medicine at Osmania Medical College after clearing the entrance exam with 27th rank. He then pursued an MD in internal medicine at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania. He also worked for five years at Johns Hopkins University and Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
Dr. Pemmasani is also the founder of UWord, an online learning platform for high-level competitive exams in the US. In 2020 he won the Ernst & Young award as a young entrepreneur in the US.
TDP loyalists
He comes from a family of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) loyalists. His father Sambasiva Rao was a great admirer of TDP founder NT Rama Rao. He joined the TDP and served as the vice-president of Nasaraopet town. Dr Pemmasani also joined the TDP to support its leader Chandrababu Naidu. When he was in the US, he helped organise events when Naidu visited the country.
He waited for an opportunity to contest elections in India. In the 2024 elections, he was allotted the Guntur seat, which was vacated by another industrialist Jayadev Galla after he quit politics. He defeated the YSRCP candidate by a margin of 340,000 votes. He is considered one of the richest candidates contesting the 2024 elections. He has declared his family’s wealth to be over $1.5 billion. Rs 5,785 crore
