New Delhi. The giant tech company Google has suffered a major setback. Actually, the pricing policy of Google-owned ‘Google Play Store’ has come under scrutiny. Fair trade regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Friday (March 15) ordered an investigation into alleged anti-competitive practices in Google’s Play Store pricing policy.
Play Store accused of violating competition law
The Competition Commission of India said in this order that the petitioners are mainly aggrieved by the payment policies of Google-owned app store ‘Google Play Store’. Play Store is accused of violating competition law.

Recently Google removed some apps from Play Store
This order comes within 2 weeks of Google removing some apps from the Play Store due to payment related issues. On March 1, Google had removed some apps from its Play Store in India due to the dispute over service fee payment. However, after the intervention of the government, these apps were restored within a few days.
These allegations on the payment policies of Google Play Store
The companies that filed the appeal in CCI include People Interactive India Private Limited, Mebigo Labs Private Limited, Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation (IBDF) and Indian Digital Media Industry Foundation (IDMIF). It is alleged that the payment policies of Google Play Store are affecting many stakeholders including app developers, payment processors and users.
Order for investigation due to violation of Section 4 of the Competition Act
The Competition Commission of India said in its 21-page order that prima facie it appears that Google has violated Section 4 (Abuse of Dominant Position) of the Competition Act and hence an investigation into the matter has been ordered.
