Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSEAccording to officials, ) is planning a pilot run of open-book examination (OBE) in selected schools for classes 9 to 12 later this year.

This idea was mooted in the last Governing Body meeting of CBSE Board in December, 2023. However, officials said there are no plans to adopt the format in Class 10 and 12 board exams.

“The CBSE It is planning a pilot program of open-book assessment in selected schools, targeting subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science for Classes 9 and 10, and English, Mathematics and Biology for Classes 11 and 12. “The plan is in line with the recommendations made in national curriculum framework, These tests will undergo a pilot phase in schools to evaluate various aspects such as completion time, suitability for formative and summative assessment and perceptions of stakeholders, a senior board official said.

In open-book exams, students are allowed to carry their own notes, textbooks, or other study materials and refer to them during the exam.

The pilot will focus on assessing higher-level thinking skills, application, analysis, critical and creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities. While design, development and review open book test Proposed to be completed by June 2024, pilot testing of materials in schools is being planned in November-December 2024.

CBSE had experimented with the first one Open Text-Based Assessment (OTBA) format for class 9 and 11 end-end examinations for three years from 2014-15 to 2016-17, but it was scrapped based on negative feedback from stakeholders.

Drawing from this experience, discussions within the curriculum committee emphasized the importance of high-quality textbooks and suggested involving teachers in initial OBE tests to ensure similar standards to Advanced Placement examinations.

At the governing body meeting, the board also considered giving teachers an open-book test first to understand the “potential” of multiple answers in OBE questions.

CBSE The Chairman stressed the need to learn from the experiences of Delhi University to effectively calibrate CBSE’s OBE preparedness.

Professor Jyoti Sharma of Delhi University, who was present at the meeting, drew parallels with Advanced Placement (AP) exams for US college admissions, appreciating the clarity and quality of their questions, advocating for the same high standard in OBE content.

she suggested CBSE One should consider AP questions as a benchmark to draft quality CBSE OBE material.
