Canada is considering placing a cap on the number of international students due to the housing affordability crisis due to the high demand for foreign students.
Immigration Minister Mark Miller recently announced a number of new requirements, including proof of funds, to be more accessible to foreign students wishing to come to study in Canada. The previous $10,000 proof of accessible funds has been increased to $20,635, with adjustments based on Statistics Canada’s cost of living benchmark. The purpose of this change is to ensure that students have adequate financial resources to fund their education and living.
In addition to the announcement of admission cuts, the Toronto Star recently reported that in the second half of 2023, nearly 40% of student visa applications from India were rejected, the highest refusal rate among all countries. Reasons for rejection were classified as ‘other’ or ‘unspecified’.
Amidst the uncertainties, if you need to look at countries beyond the US and UK (keeping in mind the huge tuition fees) that offer the best courses and are also affordable, here is a list compiled by World Education Service.
5 countries that offer good courses at affordable fees:
Norway: The best thing about studying in Norway is that, except for some specialized courses, higher education in Norway at public universities (both from within and outside the EU) is free.
Additionally, there are a large number of locals who are fluent in English and students at all levels will find English-taught programs.
The only downside is that the cost of living in Norway is high, a student will need Rs 1.4 crore per year to live there
Taiwan: Some of the best universities today are in Taiwan and high quality courses are offered at very good prices. For example, National Taiwan University, the country’s leading university, offers UG programs for liberal arts. 3 lakh.
Additionally, more than 120 courses are taught in English at more than 40 universities
Germany: Like Norway, tuition fees are not charged for undergraduate and PhD level programs at all public universities, except Baden-Württemberg.
Master’s degree students who have not studied for their bachelor’s degree in Germany are likely to pay approx 19 lakhs. But, you also apply for scholarships.
France: Tuition fees are almost the same for both domestic and international students Rs.20,000 per year for graduate (licensure) programmes, 25,000 more for most master’s programs 40,000 for Ph.D. Fees are quite high at highly selective institutions.
However, the cost of living in some cities, especially Paris, is very high.
Mexico: Tuition fees vary, with private universities charging more and averaging around Rs 5 lakh for international graduate students in the capital Mexico City, which was named one of the top 100 cities in the world for students.
Although the main language of instruction is Spanish, Mexican universities are offering more English-taught courses to attract international students.
Furthermore, the cost of living is quite low.
