Toronto: Canada’s outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Daniel Smith, leader of the country’s oil-rich Alberta province, are confident that Canada can avoid America’s 25 percent tariff. US President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose a 25 percent tariff on Canada from February 1. Justin Trudeau and Daniel Smith argued that Canada is an energy superpower, with oil and significant mineral reserves, and that the United States would need these assets to build a “fast-growing” economy, as Trump has pledged.
Doug Ford, head of Ontario, the center of manufacturing and automobiles in Canada, said that business competition is going to be 100 percent. Ford said in an interview with ‘Associated Press’ (AP), ‘Trump has declared ‘economic war’ on Canada and we will try every way we can to protect our economy.’
America will retaliate
Trudeau said Canada would retaliate if necessary. However, he also mentioned that this issue had also arisen during Trump’s first term, but he was successful in restarting talks on a free trade agreement. Ford said he would direct Ontario’s Liquor Control Board to remove all US-made liquor as soon as Trump imposes the tariffs.
Ford said, ‘We are the largest buyer of alcohol in the world and I am going to encourage all provincial premiers to do the same.’ He said that in response, dollar-for-dollar tariffs will be imposed on American goods coming to Canada. He said, ‘We are also going to target the areas ruled by the Republican Party. They will feel the same pain as the people of Canada. The American people will also feel this pain.
Canada will give a befitting reply
Ford said, ‘A message to countries around the world: If they want to use Canada as an example, you will also be a target. Canada will also give you a befitting reply. Trump had said that tariffs could be imposed on Canada and Mexico from February 1. However, he has signed an executive order requesting a coordinated report by the Finance Minister by April 1.
