Consistent aerobic exercise benefited both men and women and helped lower blood sugar levels.
Type 1 diabetes is very common. Health experts recommend exercising daily to combat diabetes symptoms and keep it under control. However, finding the right kind of exercise for us and striking a healthy balance between workouts and diet is an essential part of dealing with chronic diseases like diabetes. When we choose a workout routine for type 1 diabetes, we must keep in mind keeping blood sugar levels balanced and promoting cardiovascular health. A recent study shed light on this and suggested that consistent aerobic exercise may be the best workout routine for diabetics.
How effective is sustained aerobic exercise for diabetics?
The study found that sustained aerobic exercise can help balance blood sugar levels in people with type 1 diabetes. Sustained exercise refers to workout routines that maintain a steady and moderate pace throughout – such as walking and jogging. Women were found to benefit more from sustained aerobic exercise than men.

The study also looked at the benefits of interval training exercises – this exercise routine involves alternating between periods of low and high intensity walking and jogging. While interval training can also benefit diabetics, continuous aerobic exercise showed more healthy results.
Gender differences in exercise responses:
The study, conducted on 19 adults with type 1 diabetes, showed significant gender differences in the response of diabetics to exercise. After continuous aerobic exercise, blood sugar levels were found to be more stable in women. However, men showed a larger reduction in blood sugar levels after both types of exercise – continuous aerobic exercise and interval training.

Co-author Dr. Pooya Soltani of Staffordshire University said in a statement that diabetic patients are often not motivated enough for physical activities. However, exercise can greatly help in improving health and reducing blood sugar levels.
