Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, have welcomed the Supreme Court order on the bulldozer action. Supreme Court lays down strict guidelines to curb “bulldozer justice”. It said that the executive cannot declare a person guilty nor can it become a judge and decide to demolish the property of an accused person.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav praised the Supreme Court’s decision while targeting the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh. He said, “The Supreme Court has commented against the bulldozer, which has become a symbol of this (BJP) government.”
Thanking the Supreme Court for the verdict, Yadav asked, “What can you expect from people who know how to demolish houses? At least after today, their bulldozer will always be standing in the garage, now no one’s house will be demolished…” Yadav said while addressing a public rally in Sisamau.
The SP leader said, “What can be a bigger comment than this against the government? We have full faith in the court. One day our MLAs will be released and will come among us. They will work the same way as before.”
Meanwhile, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi described the Supreme Court’s “bulldozer verdict” as a “welcome relief”. “The most important part of this is not its rhetoric, but the enforceable guidelines,” he posted on Twitter. Hopefully, they will stop state governments from punishing Muslims and other marginalized groups en masse.
Owaisi said, “We must remember that no one @NarendraModi has celebrated the bulldozer raj which the Supreme Court today called an “anarchic situation”.
Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole also targeted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and said that he should keep his politics in UP only. “The BJP government has started politics of creating fear by misusing ED, CBI and bulldozers in some states. The Supreme Court has rejected them and we welcome it,” Patole said as quoted by ANI.
On the Supreme Court’s decision on the bulldozer action, Delhi Minister and AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said that this country is run by the Constitution and action should be taken against anyone as per the law.
He said, “This ‘grandfathering’ going on in the name of bulldozer action is illegal. The government and the high courts of the states, wherever these bulldozing actions are being carried out, must have already taken cognizance of this…,” Bhardwaj said.
CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat wished that the decision on the bulldozer action had come earlier. He said, “I welcome the Supreme Court’s decision declaring the bulldozer action illegal and malicious. “I only wish that the decision had come earlier as it would have saved many houses in BJP-led states from being bulldozed,” Karat said in a statement.
BSP president Mayawati expressed hope that the ‘terror’ of bulldozers will definitely end now, while Congress Uttar Pradesh chief Ajay Rai said the decision will end ‘jungle raj’ in the state.
