Retired IAS officer Shishir Sinha has recently been appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of Bihar Sports University by the state government.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the first sports university of Bihar located at Rajgir in Nalanda district. This recognition has now placed the University among the reputed institutions recognized by the UGC under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had inaugurated the state’s first sports academy and Bihar Sports University, which will be part of the International Sports Complex in Rajgir, on National Sports Day on August 29 last year.
According to a statement issued by the university on Saturday, “Bihar Sports University, Rajgir has received recognition from the UGC under Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act, 1956. Now, the university has the authority to start academic courses which include Undergraduate and other Diploma/PG Diploma courses in Physical Education and Sports Science.” The statement said that the university intends to launch several academic programs from the next academic session 2025 – 2026.
“These programs include: Diploma/Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Sports Coaching in two or three sports, Diploma/Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga, four-year Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) (with recognition from National Council of Teacher Education Subject) ),” it said.

As per UGC guidelines, the University shall immediately appoint an Ombudsman as per the UGC (Redressal of Students’ Grievances) Regulations, 2023 for redressal of student grievances within two months of commencement of academic activities.
