Yemen’s internationally recognized Presidential Council has made a major change of power in the country. On Monday, the council dismissed the country’s Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed from the post (Yemen Prime Minister Sacked). He was PM since 2018. In his place, the country’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak has been made the new Prime Minister of the country. This is being considered a quite unexpected step.
Bin Mubarak is considered very close to Saudi Arabia. The council has not given any reason for this change. Political turmoil in Yemen is not new. In fact, civil war has been going on here since 2014. This decision has come at a time when the US-led military coalition is targeting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. In 2014, Houthi terrorists captured the country’s capital Sanaa and overthrew the governance here.
Civil war has broken out in Yemen
After a few months, people supported by Saudi Arabia started fighting against these rebels in the year 2015 itself. His aim was to restore the government’s rule in the country. Due to this war, Yemen has come to the brink of complete destruction. According to ABC News website, this country comes in the list of poorest Arab countries. More than 1 lakh civilians and fighters have been killed in the civil war here.
Houthi-Arab agreement
In recent months, Houthi terrorists have tried to establish an agreement with Saudi Arabia, due to which the war has stopped and they have come out of it. Both sides believe that they can regain the ceasefire that ended years ago. Ever since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas in October last year, this peace agreement has also been damaged. After this conflict, Houthis have started attacks on the sea route in the Red Sea. They say that this is the result of Israel’s attack, which they carried out on Palestinian fighters. It is believed that like the Houthis, they too have the support of Iran. In view of these attacks by Houthi, America and Britain have attacked Yemen occupied by Houthi terrorists.
