Although, a lot of money will be required for this, but this country has used amazing brains to overcome this crisis. Dominica has started selling the citizenship of its country. For citizenship, people will have to pay approximately 2 lakh US dollars (Rs 1.68 crore).
Dominica’s former Finance Minister Francine Baron has described this initiative of the government as the savior of the country. At the same time, the current Finance Minister Irving McIntyre has emphasized on the country being financially self-reliant to deal with climate change. “This program means a lot to us,” he said in a post on X. We realized that to deal with climate change we had to adopt a self-reliant form of financing.
Let us tell you that after Hurricane Maria, Dominica’s economy has suffered huge losses. It is estimated that this loss is twice the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has vowed to rebuild the country better and more environmentally friendly. He said there is an urgent need for funds to reduce future climate risks.
Let us tell you that this is not the first time that Dominica has started selling the citizenship of its country. This has been going on since 1990. But, after Hurricane Maria of 2017, the government has promoted it a lot. However, European Union countries including the US have expressed concern over citizenship without checking someone’s background.
