Automobile manufacturers in the country have had a positive start to the new year with most players across segments reporting higher sales in January compared to the same month last year.
Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India reported growth in sales this month.
Maruti Suzuki India’s total vehicle sales increased by 15.5 percent to 1,99,364 units in January from 1,72,535 units in the same month last year, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
This was the highest monthly sales ever for the Gurugram-based carmaker, whose total domestic sales rose 13 per cent to 1,70,214 vehicles from 1,51,367 units in the year-ago month.
Tata Motors was the second largest vehicle seller in India with total domestic sales of 84,276 units last month as against 79,681 units in January 2023. Its total vehicle sales (including international markets) grew 6 percent year-on-year to 86,125 units. For January 2024.
SUV major Mahindra & Mahindra’s total vehicle sales rose 15 per cent year-on-year to 73,944 units in January.
The company’s utility vehicle sales stood at 43,068 units last month from 32,915 units sold in January last year, growing 31 percent year-on-year.
Hyundai Motor India’s wholesale sales rose 8.5 percent to 67,615 units in January. The automaker had dispatched 62,276 units in the same month last year.
Domestic sales last month rose 14 percent to 57,115 units from 50,106 units in the year-ago period.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor also saw its highest monthly sales in January with 24,609 despatches, up 92 per cent from 12,835 vehicles in the same month last year.

He said other launches like Camry Hybrid, Glanza, Hilux, Vellfire and Rumion have also boosted the company’s growth story.
TKM said it has temporarily suspended the dispatch of its three models Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux in the country after irregularities were found in the certification tests of the diesel power train.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India reported a massive 41.50 per cent year-on-year growth in its total sales in January at 419,395 units.
Of the total sales, domestic sales increased to 3,82,512 units from 278,155 units last January, a growth of 37 per cent year-on-year, while exports grew 102 per cent year-on-year to 36,883 units last month. ,
Mid-sized motorcycle maker Royal Enfield reported a 2 per cent year-on-year growth in its motorcycle sales in January to 76,187 units as against a total of 74,746 units in the same month last year.
The company’s domestic sales rose 4 per cent to 70,556 motorcycles compared to 67,702 units last month, while exports declined 20 per cent to 5,631 units in January 2023 from 7,044 units.
Pune-based Bajaj Auto’s total two-wheeler volumes (domestic exports) grew 27 per cent year-on-year to 308,248 units in January.
Last month in January, the company’s total sales had increased by 24 percent on annual basis to 356010 units.
Bajaj Auto also reported a 12 per cent growth in total exports during the month under review, from 112725 vehicles shipped to overseas markets in January 2023 to 125967 units.
However, commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland’s total sales including exports declined 7 per cent in January to 15,939 units as against 17,200 units sold in the same month last year, with both MHCV and LCV segments witnessing a decline in total sales.
