Date:

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan criticized the Assam government’s action to repeal the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “hating Muslims”. He said, “BJP hates Muslims…(BJP hates Muslims)”

In a video message, he said, “They (BJP) hate our eating habits. First, they brought the law on triple talaq and now they brought the law against Muslim marriage…What is the need for a separate law in Assam? they are.” As elections approach, efforts are being made to polarize…”

On Friday, the Assam Cabinet approved the Assam Repeal Ordinance, 2024, to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act.

AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan on Friday said the ordinance to repeal the Muslim Marriage Act is “a violation of Articles 25, 26 and 28 of the Constitution.” He said everyone has the right to practice their religion.

Article 25 guarantees all citizens freedom of conscience and freedom to profess, practice and propagate religion. Article 26 deals with freedom of management of religious affairs. Article 28 talks about freedom to attend religious instruction or religious worship in certain educational institutions.

Assam Minister’s reaction

Assam minister Piyush Hazarika reacted to Pathan and asked, “How does repealing an 89-year-old law that allows marriage between a young girl and an adult man become anti-Muslim?”

Hazarika said in a post on Twitter that “Muslim leaders need to act maturely and stand up for the interest of our daughters instead of standing up for disgusting social evils.”

Meanwhile, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal claimed that repeal of the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935 was the first step towards bringing Unified Civil Code (UCC) in Assam.

“They are trying to instigate Muslims and polarize voters in their favour,” Ajmal told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Guwahati. “We will definitely oppose the repeal of the Act but after the elections,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying. We will remain silent for now.”

are responding to the lump sum compensation of Muslim marriage registrars will be given Rs 2 lakh for their rehabilitation, Ajmal said, adding that Qazis are not beggars. “Through the media I request them not to take even a single penny from the government,” he said.
