Assam CM claims Bangladeshi-origin minority community ‘voted for Congress’

Date:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has targeted people of the Bangladeshi-origin minority community and claimed that they voted for the Congress party in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.

The Chief Minister also alleged that this community was involved in communalism.

Himanta Biswa Sarma made this remark on Saturday at a felicitation ceremony of winning candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies at the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati.

He said the ruling coalition got around 47 per cent votes, while the Congress and its allies got 39 per cent votes.

The Chief Minister said, “If we analyse the 39 per cent votes of the Congress, it is not spread across the entire state. Its 50 per cent votes are concentrated in 21 assembly constituencies, which are minority-dominated. In these minority-dominated areas, the BJP got 3 per cent votes.”

He said, “This proves that Hindus do not indulge in communalism. If anyone in Assam indulges in communalism, it is only one community, one religion. No other religion does this.”

Further, the BJP leader said that minority dominated areas may not have roads, may not have electricity but they have been voting heavily for Congress and they have done so again.

He claimed that despite the development work done for them by the BJP-led government, these communities have not voted 100 per cent for the saffron party.

He said, “Except Karimganj, if we consider the centres with majority of people of Bangladeshi origin, 99 per cent votes have gone to the Congress.”

“They (minority people) may be living in houses given by (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, availing electricity and sanitation facilities given by Modi, but when they go to vote, they vote for the Congress,” he said.

He also claimed that the Bangladeshi-origin community would vote for the Congress as they want to have “control of the state for the next 10 years”.

He said the BJP and its allies won 92 out of 126 assembly constituencies in this Lok Sabha election, which is the highest ever victory for any ruling alliance in the state.
