The meaning of flying and prayer has really taken on a greater meaning these days, as there have been several recent cases of plane malfunctions that have left dozens of passengers dead and injured. The incidents with Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways have highlighted how dangerous it can be, especially for first-time flyers. Insia Khan, a marketing executive from Mumbai, admitted, “I always hated the idea of flying and have avoided it so far, but I am soon taking my first flight to Singapore for some work. I am always anxious about upcoming travels after reading about recent cases of plane malfunctions. I feel terrible whenever I think of a plane malfunctioning.”
The causes of such air turbulence vary – climate change is a major factor, as is the increase in air traffic, making it very difficult to predict when clear air turbulence (CAT) might occur. But it can be a source of great concern for travellers and it seems unlikely that this situation will ease, as reports of increased aircraft turbulence continue to be shared.
There are bumps ahead, be careful
Vaishali Arora, a clinical psychologist at mental health start-up Lisun, says it can be very scary for first-time fliers. “Experiencing turbulence can be really upsetting, especially for people who are new to flying, where unfamiliar sensations and movements can increase anxiety.”
She adds, “It’s important to normalize these feelings and acknowledge that it’s okay to be nervous. Education about the mechanics of flying and safety measures can also help reduce anxiety. Pilots are highly trained to handle turbulence, and planes are built to tolerate far more than what passengers typically experience.”
Techniques that help
Hold your breath and count, try positive visualization
Vaishali lists several strategies that can help you manage anxiety and stay calm.
It’s good to be distracted here
Distraction is another powerful technique to manage anxiety during turbulence. Ambika Chawla, a clinical psychologist at Lisun, says, “There can be many ways to distract yourself in such a situation. The primary idea of any exercise/activity is to shift your focus from the anxious thoughts of turbulence to neutral or calming thoughts. If you know that turbulence increases your anxiety, it is highly advisable to prepare yourself for such activities in advance.”
