It has been a ‘VikramAditya’ era for ISRO in space exploration in the last six months. Hot on the heels of the success of the country’s lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 in August, where the space agency successfully landed the ‘Vikram’ lander on the moon’s south pole, its Aditya spacecraft on Saturday reached its final destination to study the Sun.

The sequence of events related to Aditya L1 is as follows.
September 2, 2023: ISRO launches Aditya-L1 on PSLV-C57.
3 September: The first Earth-bound maneuver was successfully completed, achieving an orbit of 245 km x 22459 km.
September 5: The second Earth-bound maneuver was successfully completed. The new orbit achieved was 282 km x 40225 km.
10 September: Third Earth-bound maneuver achieves a new orbit of 296 km x 71767 km.

September 15: The fourth Earthbound maneuver was successfully completed to achieve a new orbit of 256 km x 121973 km.
September 18: Aditya-L1 begins collection of scientific data.
September 30: The spacecraft escapes Earth’s sphere of influence and moves toward Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1).

6 October: Trajectory Correction Maneuver (TCM) was performed for about 16 seconds to correct the trajectory. The TCM ensured that the spacecraft was on its intended path to enter the halo orbit around L1.
November 7: The HEL1OS payload captured the first high-energy X-ray glimpse of solar flares.
1 December: The Solar Wind Ion Spectrometer (SWIS) was operationalized in the Aditya Solar Wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX) payload.
December 10: The SUIT payload captures full-disk images of the Sun in near ultraviolet wavelengths.
January 6, 2024: India’s first solar observatory Aditya-L1 reaches its destination.
