In 2007, when Aamir Khan directed Taare Zameen Par, starring Darsheel Safary in the lead role, the film made waves by reinventing the stories being told in Hindi cinema. Years later, the film’s spiritual sequel, Sitare Zameen Par, is ‘way ahead’ of its predecessor, Aamir said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India. When asked about the film, Aamir said, “Well, it is a beautiful story. Actually, the easiest way I can describe it is that, Taare Zameen Par is a very emotional film that makes you cry. Sitare Zameen Par makes you laugh, it is a comedy film. The theme is the same, of people with different abilities, different intelligence or with different challenges. But, it is humor as opposed to emotion.”
The actor also claimed that the sequel will go beyond the theme of Taare Zameen Par. He said, “In many ways, I think it is way ahead of Taare Zameen Par, because in Taare Zameen Par, the person who was with the challenge in the film Ishaan was helped by my character. In Sitare Zameen Par, ten people struggling with challenges help Mary, a supposedly normal person. So I think it goes a long way. I hope it goes well.”
About Taare Zameen Par and its sequel
Taare Zameen Par, written by Amole Gupte, tells the story of Ishaan, played by Darsheel, an artistically talented 8-year-old child who is weak in studies. His teacher, Nikumbh (Aamir), helps him deal with dyslexia. When it was released, the film did an excellent job in raising awareness about learning disorders. Taare Zameen Par received critical acclaim and was a box office success. It received three National Film Awards.
The spiritual sequel Sitare Zameen Par was announced for October 2023. It will star Aamir, Darsheel and Genelia Deshmukh in lead roles. RS Prasanna is directing the sequel, which is based on the 2018 Spanish film Champions.
