Budapest: Hungarian President Katalin Novak has resigned from the post following the child abuse pardon scandal. “I am addressing you for the last time as president, I resign from the post of President of the Republic,” Novak said on national television channel M1 on Saturday.
According to the report of news agency Xinhua, she said, ‘I apologize to those whom I have hurt and to all the victims who may have felt that I did not stand with them. I was, am and will always be in support of the safety of children and families.

Varga was justice minister when Novak signed the controversial pardon. Mate Kocsis, head of the ruling Fidesz party’s parliamentary group, reacted to their resignation on his Facebook page, saying: ‘Catalin Novak and Judit Varga have taken a responsible decision, which we respect.’
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Facebook on Thursday that he has submitted a constitutional amendment on behalf of the government to stop granting amnesty to perpetrators of crimes against minors. Elected to the post by the Hungarian Parliament in 2022, Novak is the country’s first female president and also the youngest to hold the position.
