Many of us are eagerly waiting for the second season of Squid Game, but DU College has gone a step further this festive season and added the hugely popular Korean survival thriller series to its roster.
“It’s a lot of fun, plus the games are great. Sania Jain, a first-year B.Com (Hons.) student at Hansraj College, confesses, “I actually Googled how I could be a part of the reality show that they came out with.” She adds, ‘I was disappointed to learn that participants were eliminated. 21 even though I am only 18 years old. So when I came to know that festivals have competitions based on this series, I immediately made a list of all the colleges I have to visit this festive season!”
More than 300 participants participated in the recently concluded fest of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW). “Every time someone was eliminated, we used a fake gun to tag them,” laughs Laeva, a third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student. “The highlight was making the props. For the cookie cutter game, where you have to trace a circle or umbrella based on a drawing, we made cardboard cutouts of them and brought safety pins for participants to cut them out.
The fascination with this morbid but entertaining series has also attracted the organizers of Shivaji College’s upcoming fest, Vibrations. “Just seeing the name creates interest, and it plays a vital role in increasing student participation compared to regular silly skits,” says Anshaj Madan, a final year B.Com (Prog) student and student union member. Organizing body. “The games will be fun and harmless. The idea is to feel less stressed about internal exams, final semester exams, life after college or anything else.”
Seeing a recreation of the squid game on Instagram inspired Manisha Singh, a final year BA (Hons) Psychology student at Lady Shri Ram College for Women and head of the college’s organizing committee, to adopt it for her festival Tarang ’24. “The Red Light Green Light game and the task of collecting objects based on flashing images on their screens are some of the tasks that will be based on an elimination system and will continue for two days,” she says.
